European Food Science Day

Bringing the results back to the consumers

We would like to inform you about the CommNet event: "European Food Science Day".

The dioxin scandal, alarms on harmful chemicals in baby bottles and avian flu are examples of dramatic food health issues that have reached European citizens in the past years. In effect confidence and trust in food items has decreased among consumers.

Policy makers and industry are therefore faced with food related issues that need to be resolved urgently based on evidence. While EU-funded research addresses these changes, food and health scientists lack a natural forum to reach Europe’s policy makers and consumers. This platform is necessary to provide European consumers, via authorities and media, with safer and healthier food and nutrition advice in which they have confidence.

At the European Food Science Day key results in the field of food quality, food safety, nutrition and health will be presented. Our experts will discuss topics such as the melamine case, swine influenza, food allergies, nutrition in pregnancy for life-long health, and the impact of infant-feeding on obesity.

This event is a collective effort of ten research networks within CommNet. Together we represent more than 2000 European researchers. Our goal with this day is to further spread this important scientific knowledge to a wider audience. Welcome!

PathogenCombat at the European Food Science Day

The European Food Science Day was held in Brussels on November 18, 2009 and brought together over 100 participants from a variety of stakeholders. Its aim was to widely disseminate the results of EU funded projects in the field of food and nutrition science. Speakers included high level representatives from the Commission and the European Parliament as well as from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries (CIAA) and the European Consumers’ Organisation. The projects presented their results in three breakout sessions on “Safer Food”, “Improving Health” and “Reducing Risks”.
