Until 1 January 2007 the Faculty of Life Sciences was an independent Danish university - The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (KVL). Following a merger with the University of Copenhagen and the Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences, KVL became the Faculty of Life Sciences (in short LIFE) - a faculty under the University of Copenhagen. LIFE is coordinating the project. Scientifically, the group will contribute with expertise within bioimaging of single microbial cells using Fluorescent Ratio Imaging Microscopy (FRIM) and an Optical Tweezers. Transcriptomics and proteomics of pathogenic bacteria and yeasts for understanding cell-matrix interaction in the food chain will be carried out. A strong platform for protective and probiotic cultures is also established. Furthermore, the extensive experience acquired in Food Safety Management will be used in the project. The group will also contribute with its experience from participating in the Danish Salmonella Programme at farm level.

Key persons for PathogenCombat

Prof. Mogens Jakobsen will be the Coordinator of PathogenCombat and leader of the activities carried out by KVL. Briefly, MJ has spent almost an equal number of years in academic and private industry. He has many years of experience in management of national and international research projects and actual research work within the area of food microbiology, fermentation of food and beverages, food safety and food safety management in general. Areas of scientific experience are microbial ecology and physiology studies by molecular biology tools and advanced methods of microscopy.

Dr. Henrik Siegumfeldt (Leader WP1) has specialised in food microbiology with main emphasis on advanced microscopic techniques for studies of interaction of individual microbial cells, including starter cultures and foodborne pathogens with food matrices and food contact surfaces in the food chain. Extensive experience has been obtained in FRIM. He is responsible for the construction and installation of an Optical Tweezer at KVL.

Senior Scientist Lene Jespersen (Leader WP2) is a food scientist specialised in microbiology. Her areas of scientific expertise are functional genomics, transcriptomics as well as proteomics, array technology, microbial ecology and bio-diversity and microbial physiology, primarily for yeast but also bacteria. She also has extensive experience in methods like flow cytometry and FRIM. She is partner in a project studying adhesion of yeast to solid matrices by use of convergent evolution.

Senior Scientist Niels Arneborg (involved in WP2, WP8) is a chemical engineer specialised in microbiology in particular fermentation of food and beverages. His areas of scientific expertise are FRIM, microbial physiology, microbial ecology, advanced microscopical techniques and microbiological interactions with special reference to yeast. Funding has just been obtained for a project on convergent evolution to study attachment of yeast to solid matrices.
